De Kunsthal in Rotterdam is honored to host an exhibition of several, known and unknown, pictures and pieces of the man who’s art just never gets old.
Born in 1928 in Pittsburgh, America, Andy Warhol moved to New York in 1949, building up a name as an illustrator in the advertising business. When he reached his thirties – the sixties – the revolutionary artist successfully translated daily attributes like Coca Cola bottles and cans of soup into ready made art. Colorful pop art paintings quickly followed.
Warhol’s studio, The famous Factory, grew into a melting pot for all NY rebels with a cause. Transvestites, top models, actors, poets, painters, gay, straight or crooked: all with an artistic, outsiders eye on capitalistic society were welcomed into The Factory.
A part of Hugo and Carla Brown’s private art collection has been temporarily borrowed for the exhibition. The couple is the proud owner of a collection reaching up to a thousand pieces , partly Warhols.
Attached are some shots of a Warhol exhibition I’ve visited about a year ago in Seoul. It was a perfect combination of an intellectual boost and plain fun. Andy Warhol will be in the spotlights at De Kunsthal in Rotterdam from the 4th of February till the 1st of April.
