Louis Vuitton is the main supporter of the Yayoi Kusama exhibition at Tate Modern London. The exhibition consists of artworks in various media including painting, collage, soft sculpture, installation and film. Kusama and Louis Vuitton will also collaborate on an installation in the Louis Vuitton Bond Street Maison dedicated exhibition space.
Starting in the 1940's, Yayoi Kusama’s work spans over six decades. Kusama is one of Japan’s best-known living artists and has developed an extensive body of work. Her work is based in conceptual art and shows some attributes of feminism, minimalism, surrealism, Art Brut, pop art, and abstract expressionism, and is infused with autobiographical, psychological, and sexual content. Kusama is also a published novelist and poet, and has created notable work in film and fashion design. All share an obsession with repetition, pattern, and accumulation - she has described herself as an "obsessive artist", the polka dot being her most well-known pattern.
"...a polka-dot has the form of the sun, which is a symbol of the energy of the whole world and our living life, and also the form of the moon, which is calm. Round, soft, colorful, senseless and unknowing. Polka-dots become movement... Polka dots are a way to infinity." - Yayoi Kusama
The exhibition at Tate Modern will reveal a history of successive developments and daring advances, demonstrating why Kusama remains one of the most engaging practitioners today.
Feel welcomed to wander around Kusama's world at Tate Modern London from the 9th of February until the 5th of June 2012.
